New Block Paving Driveway Watlington
Block Paving Contractors in the OX49 Area
A block paved driveway is one of the few improvements that pays you back every day. It handles vehicle weight without cracking the way a slab or a poured surface can; individual blocks lift and relay if you ever need access to a service, and a properly laid drive still looks right twenty years on.
AC Drives & Landscaping has been laying block paving for over 30 years and works across Watlington and the surrounding OX49 area. Every job is quoted free and with no obligation after a site visit, so you get a real price rather than a rate per square metre that changes once we see the ground. Call 01491 371335 to arrange one.

Why Homeowners Choose Block Paving
Block paving is the most popular driveway surface in the UK for a reason, but it is not the right answer for every property. Here is the honest version.
What it does well
- Takes vehicle weight better than almost any other surface when the base is built properly
- Damaged or stained blocks can be lifted and swapped individually rather than resurfacing the whole drive
- The widest choice of colour, size and pattern of any driveway material
- Permeable options meet drainage rules without a separate soakaway
- Adds kerb appeal and, in most cases, value to the property
What to weigh up
- It costs more than tarmac or gravel to install, because most of the work is in the ground
- It is a skilled job. Poor edge restraints or a thin sub-base will show as sinking and spreading within a couple of winters
- Joints need topping up with kiln dried sand every few years, and weeds will appear in the joints if they are neglected
- Oil leaks stain, so a sealant is worth considering on a working drive
If block paving is not the right fit, we also lay resin, tarmac and gravel drives in Watlington, and we will say so at the quote stage rather than sell you the wrong surface.

Block paving styles, colours and patterns
Laying patterns
- Herringbone, at 45 or 90 degrees: The strongest pattern available and the standard choice for driveways, because the interlocking blocks resist the twisting force of car tyres.
- Stretcher bond: Simple, clean and well suited to paths, borders and smaller patios.
- Basketweave: Traditional look, best kept to patios and pedestrian areas rather than under vehicles.
- Circle and fan features: A focal point in a larger drive or patio, usually set into a herringbone field.
- Contrast borders and edging: A single or double course in a contrasting colour to frame the drive and sharpen the finish.
Colours: Brindle, charcoal, grey, black, buff, red and mixed or rumbled shades. Lighter greys and buffs suit modern rendered and new build properties, brindle and autumn mixes sit better against brick, and charcoal borders work with almost everything. We bring samples to the quote so you can see them against your house rather than on a screen.
Ranges we lay: Marshalls Drivesett Tegula and Keyblok, Bradstone Woburn Rumbled and StoneMaster, Tobermore and Brett. If you have seen a drive locally that you like, tell us, and we will identify the product.
How we lay a block paving driveway in Watlington
Most of the cost of a block paved drive is buried where you will never see it. This is the specification we work to on every job in Watlington.
- Excavation: We dig out to between 200mm and 250mm below finished level for a domestic driveway, deeper where the ground is soft or the drive will take heavy vehicles. All spoil is removed from site.
- Edge restraints: Kerbs and edging courses are set and haunched in concrete before any paving goes down. This is the single most common thing skipped by cheap installers, and it is why drives spread and sink at the edges.
- Sub-base: MOT Type 1 laid and compacted in layers with a plate compactor or roller, never in one deep lift. This is the layer carrying the load.
- Drainage: Falls are set away from the property, with channel drainage, a soakaway or permeable construction as the site requires.
- Bedding layer: A screeded sharp sand bed, 30mm to 40mm once compacted, levelled to a consistent depth.
- Laying: 50mm blocks for domestic driveways, 60mm or 80mm for commercial and heavy use areas, laid to your chosen pattern and cut in cleanly around manholes, kerbs and features with a block splitter or saw.
- Jointing and compaction: Kiln dried sand brushed into the joints and vibrated in over several passes, then topped up until the joints are full.
- Finish: Site cleared, drive swept, waste taken away. You can usually walk on it the same day and drive on it after 24 to 48 hours, a little longer in cold or wet weather.
Most domestic driveways take between three and six working days from start to finish, depending on size, access and any groundwork.
How much does a Block Paving Driveway Cost in Watlington
We cannot give a real price without seeing the site, and any paving company that quotes a firm figure down the phone is guessing. What we can do is be straight about what drives the cost, so you know what you are comparing when quotes come back.
What moves the price:
- Size and shape: Larger drives work out better value per square metre. Lots of curves, circles and cut in features push the figure up.
- The ground: Soft or made up ground needs deeper excavation and more stone.
- Access: A drive a machine can reach costs less to dig out than one where everything comes through a side gate by barrow.
- The block: A standard 200 x 100 block is the most economical option; a premium rumbled or granite faced product sits at the top end.
- Extras: Dropped kerbs, drainage, steps, retaining walls, pillars, lighting and turfing all sit outside the paving figure.
- Removal of the old surface: Breaking out and disposing of concrete or tarmac adds to the groundwork.

Permeable paving, drainage and planning permission
If you are laying a new driveway over what is currently a front garden, drainage matters legally as well as practically.
In England and Wales, you do not normally need planning permission for a new driveway if the surface is permeable, or if surface water is directed to a lawn, border or soakaway within your own property rather than running onto the road. If you lay more than five square metres of impermeable surface in a front garden and the water runs off to the highway, you will usually need to apply.
Permeable block paving solves this by design. The blocks are laid with wider joints filled with angular grit, and the sub-base is built from clean, open graded stone so water drains through the surface and into the ground beneath. It looks the same as standard block paving from the pavement.
We will advise on the right approach at survey stage, including soakaways, channel drains and linear drainage where a permeable build is not practical.
Dropped kerbs and vehicle crossovers
If there is no existing vehicle access to your property, or the crossover is too narrow for the new drive, you will need approval from the local highways authority before the kerb can be lowered. The application is made to the council, and the work itself must be carried out by an approved contractor.
We handle dropped kerbs and crossovers as part of the wider driveway job in Watlington and can talk you through the application process at the quote.

FAQs - Block Paving Driveways in Watlington OX49
It’s good practice to provide maintenance to your driveway usually in the form of regular sweeping, jet washing and the occasional sanding.
Costs will vary depending on the size of your drive, materials used, any necessary base work, patterns and used extras such as edging, steps or drainage. No two block paving projects are the same. Please contact us and we will be happy to provide a free site survey and quote and a timeframe for completion.
You’ll see it used in shopping centres and pedestrian areas where it provides practical, long-lasting attractive paving and it has been a popular driveway option for homeowners for many years. Permeable block paving reduces surface run-off water by allowing it to drain between the blocks and into the sub-base.
Block paving professionally laid on a subbase is stronger than concrete itself. You could expect it to last a lifetime if due care is taken with your driveway in the form of regular maintenance.
